States With More Families Experiencing Homelessness Than Individuals
January 17, 2020
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development recently released its 2019 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, detailing the organization’s point-in-time estimates of homelessness across the country. The report provides a snapshot view of the state of homelessness in America, based on point-in-time counts conducted during the last 10 days of January each year.
Among other data, the report estimates the number of people experiencing homelessness within specific populations, such as families or unaccompanied youth. While the majority of people experiencing homelessness across America are individuals, there are some states where it is estimated that it is more common for people in families with children to be facing homelessness than individuals.
While the initial cause of homelessness for families can vary widely from one family to the next, there are a few reasons why a family might be hesitant to seek out shelter. Some families, for example, are concerned that a mass shelter will separate their family based on gender. Similarly, many families have pets, which can be prohibited at some mass shelters. Regardless of the reasons that families aren’t accessing shelters, we can all agree that they’re better off in housing, together with the rest of their family.
That’s why Pallet’s shelters were designed to be an effective space for sheltering families. With personal shelter solutions like Pallet, families have a safe, locking space where they can begin to find stability for their entire family, including a pet. For families seeking shelter, a locking door provides the security and dignity required to begin their reintegration into their community.
